Fire in abandoned building on Baldwin Ave.

This four-plex (on the right) caught fire earlier tonight on Baldwin Ave. Bill Kingston

CORNWALL, Ontario

Bill Kingston
Firefighters were able to quickly snuff out a blaze in an abandoned home near Cornwall's Le Village neighbourhood. The fire at the boarded-up four-plex on Baldwin Avenue started around 10 p.m. Neighbour Scott Szabadka says he smelled something burning and opened his back window to find smoke rolling out of the house next door. He says by the time he got downstairs the fire department was already on the scene. Szabadka says there was a lot of smoke and he was told by fire officials that it could have been a lot worse with the windy conditions tonight. The wind had been gusting to 50 km/h at times which could have fanned the flames.

Szabadka tells TheCornwallDaily.com his family has been trying to get the city to address the abandoned building. (Play Audio) Szabadka says some neighbours had talked about seeing people inside the building with flashlights the night before. There's no word on any injuries. Firefighters are expected to be on the scene throughout the night. Szabadka's family and other neighbours have been allowed to return to their homes.

We have tried everything to get something done to this as you call it hell hole. I'm John Szabadka that lives next door to this dump. The city will do nothing as long as it doesn't affect public safety (whatever that's suppose to mean. They say their hands are tied. We tried the petition some 4-5 years ago and it did nothing not even the paper it was done on. I have personnally contacted mayors, councillors, city departments with no success. I sent a letter to the editor of the daily paper a couple of months ago and told them this would happen and it did. I am at my ends with this building but still live next door and now I worry about the safety of my family that we can't be safe in our own homes anymore. But do the city fathers care. Not a bit. Put them beside this and see if something would be done or not. On another note, if this is your tennant that called the fire department Saturday night, please thank them for me. They are my heroes as they saved my home and my family from what could of been a disaster.

We own a duplex on First Street and this eye sore is right in our tenants back yard. Lately they have noticed teenagers smoking up around the building almost daily and we all thought a fire could be a possibility. Again last night, one of the tenants saw some kids around the building and shortly after it was on fire. What i would like to know is why the City doesn't demolish this hell hole! Why do they have to wait when it has beeen unoccupied for years! It's putting people homes and lives in grave danger and the City doesnt seem to care. I think we need to start a petition and bring it to City Hall. Unfortunately, I am going for an operation on Wednesday and will be unable to do much for some time, otherwise I would go from house to house after work or I guess you can also get signatures on line but not sure how that works! But if anyone else wants to start one to hand in to the City, I will sign it and get my tenants to support it also. Hope someone can start it up, seems like a good time.
