Police Seek Public's Help In Case of Missing Russell County Woman

Police are hoping you may have seen a middle-aged woman from Russell County in the Cornwall-area. 48-year-old Parise Ouellette was reported missing by family nearly six weeks ago. She was seen by neighbours on July 30th walking her small beige female poodle called "Mitsou." She was last spotted a day later in the Long Sault-area and police believe she may be walking to New Brunswick. Ouellette is described as 5'10", 170 pounds, a medium build with green eyes and very short white hair. Investigators don't have a clothing description. Police say she requires medication which she did not have with her when she vanished.

Canada's shadow war ends when troops leave Kandahar in 2011, overseas commander

OTTAWA - The shadow war fought in Afghanistan by Canada's ultra-secret, special forces will also end next year when the army ceases combat operations in Kandahar, says the general in charge of the country's overseas command. It is a significant, if somewhat unrecognized, milestone for a force whose exploits have been blanketed in secrecy for almost a decade. - Read more...

Venezuelan vice-president: government did not violate hunger striker's rights

CARACAS, Venezuela - Venezuela never violated the rights of a farmer who died after lengthy hunger strikes, the country's vice-president said Thursday. The government "did everything in our power" to keep Franklin Brito alive and to resolve the land dispute that led to his strike, Vice-President Elias Jaua said in the government's first detailed response to Brito's death Monday. - Read more...

Canada's five biggest banks earned $4.8 billion in third quarter

TORONTO - Canada's five biggest banks earned a combined $4.8 billion in third-quarter profit ? nine per cent more than last year ? as they cashed in on strong growth in mortgages, consumer and corporate loans and other retail operations. While the results were higher than the $4.4 billion in profits booked in the same 2009 period, the banks took a major hit from weakness in their capital markets divisions as economic uncertainty affected returns on stock markets. - Read more...

'Selling New York' explores multi-million dollar real estate in Manhattan

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Back in the day on "Green Acres," Lisa Douglas used to sing, "I just adore a penthouse view." She'd really adore "Selling New York," the high-end real estate reality show premiering Sept. 8 on HGTV Canada. How high end? Oliver and Lisa Douglas could not have afforded these castles in the sky. On a recent tour of four Manhattan penthouse properties showcased on the series, none were listed for less than US$8.9 million. The priciest and most spectacular ? an 8,300 sq. ft., Fifth Avenue penthouse across the street from Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art ? was listed at US$28.5 million. - Read more...
